Course summary:
The provisions of this course present fundamental concept of fire performance that all buildings are expected to achieve in some form. Fire-resistance-rated construction requirements provide passive resistance to fire. A fire produces heat products that attack structural components and smoke products that cause property damage and place occupants at risk. This course identifies the acceptable materials, techniques and methods by which proposed construction can be designed and evaluated against to determine a building's ability to limit the impact of fire. The course contains general provisions, including fire performance requirements for interior and exterior walls, opening protective's, fire blocking and draft stopping. Fire-resistance-rated construction restricts fire growth, allowing occupants to better move away from the impact of a fire, limits fire growth through the use of prescribed materials, and limits property loss from fire.
